Manchester City Council logoGeneral Decription

The Manchester City Council will participate through the Manchester Digital Development Agency (MDDA) which coordinates the Manchester Living Lab and information society initiatives across the Greater Manchester including community-based digital inclusion and broadband projects. MDDA was established in 2004. Manchester was one of the founder members of the Telecities network, now the Eurocities Knowledge Society Forum (KSF) and this work is being sustained by the MDDA. Manchester takes the lead within Eurocities on developing the Smart Cities network working with the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL) and was a founder member of ENOLL. The Eurocities network involves more than 150 European cities. We currently chair the Smart Cities Portfolio Working Group, following the successful CIP bids SMARTIP and EPIC, and are leading on the development of the Smart City Network within the FIREBALL coordinating action.

Relevant Competence

The MDDA’s team has expertise in social media, ICT systems, web/new media applications, digital cities, intelligent energy, regeneration, citizen engagement, creative and digital industries, new business models, innovation and project management. MDDA also supports the Manchester Digital trade association and the annual Big Chip Awards. Manchester will be developing further collaboration around the Smart Cities network in partnership with the City of Helsinki, firstly to create a cities forum, and, secondly, by organising an forum for political representatives to meet at the Eurocities AGM during the the project which will give an added high profile to the project during its operation.

Main role and activities to be carried out

Manchester City Council will lead on the Dissemination and Impact Work Package, as well as providing a further city use-case within the Smart mobility and smart participation Work Packages. In the Dissemination Work Package we will work closely with Partners to maximise the impact of the project to the developer community, SMEs, and to the citizens.
